Missed the show June 19? Can I blame you? Should I blame you? Nah.

It was fun. The kind of fun where art school dropouts drink all your beer while you’re playing and then can only think to ask you if you “like art” after the set. For the record, I like art. That’s the fun of shows though, right? I’m not harping, it was really fun and funny. Especially when the viking passed out and that weird Italian guy started getting really excited about muzik.

So, I figure whatever I did that night was probably seeping out of my brain, so I recorded it this weekend. My rough approximation of what I played that night can be listened to here.

It’s not like anything we usually do and may ever do again — and it moves real slow over about 18 minutes. But if for some reason you’re really curious what Demons would sound like if Paul sat out and we used more than a computer, have a listen. Be forewarned, it’s an extremely half-assed, first-take-is-the-best-take recording.

This is a cover of a song originally written by the one and only Mark Nichols, a.k.a. Handmedown Satellites. The original song appeared on a compilation put out by Scratch and Sniff Records called Circus.

A little while back, we gave our friend Josh some music we came up with in hopes that he would write some words and provide vocals for the song. A few weeks later, the lyrics were written and Josh was in our studio laying down the vocals. An hour later, we had ourselves a new song:

Our first show was at Siegler Gallery and we’ll be doing something similar this time. If you didn’t see that show, it was a departure from our rigid song structures and more free flowing — and definitely more fun for an audience.

We’re gonna let loose and do another freewheeling set. New songs. But since we’ve got the EP, we’ll probably throw out some of those songs as well.

You know how us DeKalbers do it: the music will be better than you expected and you’ll run into a bunch of people who you didn’t realize knew each other.

Beheading

I think we’re just about out of physical tapes now, so I’m gonna throw up the mp3s for “Beheading.”

I know a lot of you looked at me and said, “Oh, a tape … great.” That and the cover art definitely conspired to make us look like a metal band with this release. But it’s not metal. You know you’re gonna like it.

I put it up with each side as one track. Each side is only six minutes and consists of six “beats” from Paul on side A and five “compositions” from Sam on side B. If we were a Portland band from 2003, it would have been called “Demons Break Up.” And then there would have been rumors all over some specific message boards about whether just the band had broken up or if it was more than that and whisper whisper whisper.

But Demons has not broken up. You know what? We just got our new self-titled EP in and are passing out copies. Send us and e-mail if you want one. We’re around with copies too — and this one is on a much more convenient CD format. I’ll put that one up too once the 100 physical copies are gone.

Beheading’s ready

Little 12-minute tape “Beheading” put out by Green Tape is finally done.

We’ve got 25 copies — actually fewer now. There’s probably less than 20 tapes left, so catch up with us and we’ll give you one. Or send us an e-mail and we’ll put one aside for you.

Short and sweet, six minutes per side. All Paul on A, all Sam on B. Here’s a little sample of the tape:
